Introduction
Harnessing Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is vital for effective climate action as they offer innovative solutions for monitoring, mitigating, and adapting to climate change. The integration of ICT solutions not only aids in climate resilience but also facilitates the achievement of various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to climate action (SDG 13) and biodiversity conservation.
By examining successful strategies and available international standards, participants will gain insights into how nations can harness the full potential of ICT solutions to combat climate change and achieve climate resilience. This session aims to empower participants to maximize the impact of ICT in addressing climate challenges and advancing sustainable development agendas. This session will address two primary areas of focus: firstly, the how ICT solutions can assist in tackling climate change; and secondly, the utilization of standards such as ITU’s Recommendation ITU-T L.1480 to assess the impact of implementing ICT solutions in other sectors.
Objectives
This session will:
- Emphasize the pivotal role the ICT sector in advancing sustainability goals, particularly focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG13) – Climate Action and underscore the necessity of leveraging ICT solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation.
- Shed light on how the ICT sector can set clear targets and transition plans, underpinned by international standards, to drive sustainable practices, with a specific emphasis on solutions for data collection and monitoring related to climate change.
- Discuss how collaborative multi-stakeholder initiatives such as Green Digital Action can accelerate concrete digitally-enabled climate action.
- Underscore the importance of standardized data collection within the ICT sector and explore effective practices for leveraging this data to support sustainable development initiatives, including but not limited to climate action and biodiversity conservation.
- Discuss the application of Recommendation ITU-T L.1480 Enabling the Net Zero transition: Assessing how the use of information and communication technology solutions impact greenhouse gas emissions of other sectors as a framework for assessing the impact of utilizing ICT solutions in various sectors beyond the ICT industry, emphasizing its role in fostering sustainability and resilience.
